When an administrator tried to add an e-mail address to mail-enabled user from their workstation using Active Directory Users and Computers, the encountered an error c10308a2.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhargavs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/clip-image0021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"Error c10308a2\" border=\"0\" alt=\"error c10308a2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bhargavs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/clip-image002-thumb1.jpg\" width=\"244\" height=\"84\" ?=\"?\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The error is documented in KB article <a title=\"You receive an &quot;ID no: c10308a2&quot; error message when you use the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in to remotely add or edit an e-mail address for a mail-enabled user in Exchange Server 2003\" href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/905809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">905809<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My client was confused after looking at the article and needed some help interpreting the information and find out what he needed to do to fix the issue.<\/p>\n<p>We first assigned the permissions to Service Control Manager as mentioned in Method 1. This is essential of the Network Trace shows the errors when call to Service Control Manager fails.<\/p>\n<p>After this, the error persisted. Which indicates that user does not have permissions to access msExchangeSA service. The figure below shows the error as captured by Network Monitor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhargavs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/image2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"Netmon Capture - msExchangeSA access denied\" border=\"0\" alt=\"permissions\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bhargavs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/image-thumb2.png\" width=\"244\" height=\"25\" ?=\"?\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At this point, you need to follow Method 2 mentioned in KB article. You can either create a new GPO or edit an existing GPO that applies to your Exchange servers. Once user or group the user is member of is assigned read permissions to System Attendant service, and GPO is effectively applied to the exchange servers, administrative user should be able to successfully edit or add e-mail addresses to mail-enabled users.<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in learning what happens behind the scenes when you add an e-mail address to a user account, Ben Winzenz has wrote an <a title=\"What is going on in the background when you add an SMTP Proxy address to a user account?\" href=\"http:\/\/msexchangeteam.com\/archive\/2007\/03\/26\/437277.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> about it at <a title=\"You Had Me At EHLO...\" href=\"http:\/\/msexchangeteam.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Microsoft Exchange Team Blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One more thing.
